Stakeholder Management: A Practical Perspective

“Project Stakeholder Management includes the processes required to identify the people, groups, or organizations that could impact or be impacted by the project, to analyze stakeholder expectations and their impact on the project, and to develop appropriate management strategies for effectively engaging stakeholders in project decisions and execution. Stakeholder management also focuses on continuous communication with stakeholders to understand their needs and expectations, addressing issues as they occur, managing conflicting interests and fostering appropriate stakeholder engagement in project decisions and activities. Stakeholder satisfaction should be managed as a key project objective” [PMI PMBOK 5]

What does this means?  Many projects are executed with a little o none Stakeholder Management performed, at least in the early stages. Starting your project performing Stakeholder Management from the early beginning is like doing it “Right from Me” as stated in the Lean Methodology.

When justifying your project you should start identifying who are and who potentially will be your stakeholders.  You are justifying the project and its benefits aligned with the organization strategic business objectives.  You should consider, at least, those identified as key stakeholders.

Taking care of stakeholders’ requirements and expectations is an important practice for project success. How you perform the Stakeholder Management will provide stakeholders who support your project and might be your advocate.  Just think if you don’t do it.

Perform Stakeholder Management during your project life cycle and you will see the benefits.
